This is a general reminder to check and make sure you know the expiration date of your I-20 (F-1) or DS-2019 (J-1). It is important to understand that you cannot let this document expire when you are engaged in your studies, and for J-1’s through the period of academic training as well. Expiration of your visa document results in immediate loss of legal status. The only exception is for students applying for Post-Completion OPT, in which case the I-20 has to end before the OPT begins.
If you need to extend your visa documents, please do so at least 2-3 weeks before expiration, but in no circumstance can this be rendered after expiration.
